Look at the paragraph on page 22 where Amari's impression of the city is described. Write a post about the significance of the people/animals mentioned in that paragraph.

Hint: How do the situations of the people/animals compare or contrast with Amari's situation?

Return to the passage of Night when the two executions takes place at the end of chapter 4. The first one is concluded with the statement, "I remember I found the soup excellent that evening..." That contrasts with the following execution, which concludes, "That night the soup tasted of corpses."

Write a response in which you reflect on why Wiesel would juxtapose these two execution. Why were they different? How does that provide an understanding of life/survival in the camp?

Writing option #1

1. Think about the behavior of Amari's captors (either the white men and/or the members of the Ashanti tribe).
2. Write about 3 possible motives that would cause them to participate in the slave trade.
3. Explain why the motives you picked would have been important enough to convince them to participate.
   

Writing option #2

1. Consider the common morals that all people have.
2. Write about 3 moral conflicts the captors would have to overcome to justify their actions. (In other words, what morals would they have to ignore/reject in order to justify their actions.)
3. Explain how/why you think people are able to shut down fundamental morals when in these situations.
